u19 – freestyle computing
Calling all young people with the spirit of discovery: the next competition to claim the Golden Nica is now underway! Submission deadline is March 7, 2008.

This is the 11th time that young adventurers in electronica will be able to show how cleverly and creatively they can use the computer. u19 – freestyle computing, Austria's foremost computer competition for young people, invites kids 19 and under to submit their work—websites, sounds, graphics, animated films, podcasts, robotics applications, you name it!—and vie for the 2008 Golden Nica grand prize. If your place of residence (domicile, fixed abode) is in Austria and you won’t be older than 19 years of age on March 7, 2008, you’re qualified to enter. How? It’s simple: Projects and entry forms can be submitted online at www.u19.at or by regular mail addressed to Ars Electronica Linz GmbH, Hauptstraße 2–4, 4040 Linz, Austria, ATTN: u19. Submission deadline is March 7, 2008.

And the winner is ...?

Great prizes beckon: a Golden Nica statuette and 5,000 euros in cash for the winner, two Awards of Distinction (2,000 euros each) as well as one merchandise prize each for the u10 and 11-14 age groups. Plus, all participants get free passes to the 2008 Ars Electronica Festival! Prizewinners will be notified by the end of May 2008. The u19 Golden Nica will be presented during the festival at the Ars Electronica Gala in the Brucknerhaus. Festival week will also feature the Ars Electronica u19 ceremony showcasing all prizewinners and projects singled out for recognition.

u19 – freestyle computing goes to school

Here’s a great new offer for those who have been toying with project ideas but aren’t really sure what u19 – freestyle computing is looking for: u19 staffers will come right to your school for some in-depth consultation. In cooperation with KulturKontakt Austria, Ars Electronica is offering in-school visits and workshops at which students can learn a lot of interesting stuff about previous winners, do some R&D work on their own projects and collaborative brainstorming to come up with new ideas.

Additional information about school visits is available at www.u19.at.
