u19 Exhibit
31.08.2011 Mi/Wed - 06.09.2011 Di/Tue 10:00-19:00, LOWERDECKThis will be a colorful show indeed! The u19 Exhibit features this year’s 15 winners in the Prix Ars Electronica’s u19 – freestyle computing category. One very special project is Weltherberge Schulhaus (World Hostel Schoolhouse), a multipart installation produced collaboratively by two Upper Austrian schools, Linz High School for Artistic Design (AT) and Leonding Polytechnic School (AT). Part of this intelligent furniture grouping is a bed with a sensor-studded pillow that resembles a book and can be browsed through. There’s also a room partition that initiates communication with visitors as well as a table with the impressions of various everyday objects. Touching them produces sounds that can be combined over and over again into new compositions.
MicrosizeMe, a 3D model created at Ottakring Polytechnic School (AT) offers all sorts of adventures to those who enter it. RabbitRun, a flashgame by Stephan Schwarz (AT) and Karl Schauer (AT), demands endurance and fitness to avoid being devoured by a giant Homer Simpson. Lyzander by Paul Plessing (AT) features good level design and innovative game mechanics and calls for dexterity and concentration.
Rounding out the exhibition are the animated works—graphically sophisticated images like Nikolai Maderthoner (AT) put into FlugundFall; a nasty contemporary Little Red Riding Hood in Rotkäppchen by Judenburg (AT) High School; and technically excellent music videos that really evoke the spirit of these times.
Another wonderful effort is Bernhard Riedl’s (AT) utopian, thought-provoking story Die gut gemeinten Fesseln (The Well-Meaning Manacles); its stylistically self-confident drawings were singled out for recognition with the u14 prize.
