Der Prix Ars Electronica ist seit 1987 Seismograf für aktuelle Innovationen an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Technologie und Wissenschaft und damit wichtiges Trendbarometer der digitalen Künste. Mit 3.674 eingereichten Projekten aus 72 Ländern unterstreicht der Prix Ars Electronica einmal mehr seinen Stellenwert als wichtiger Indikator im dynamischen Umfeld der Cyberarts. Folgende sieben Kategorien sind im Rahmen des Prix Ars Electronica 2012 ausgeschrieben worden: Computer Animation/Film/VFX, Digital Communities, Digital Musics & Sound Art, Hybrid Art, Interactive Art, [the next idea] voestalpine Art and Technology Grant und u19 – CREATE YOUR WORLD.

Allesamt spiegeln sie die fortschreitende Diversifizierung digitaler Medienkunst, aber auch die kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung des Prix Ars Electronica wider. Internationale und hochkarätig besetzte Fachjurys haben über die Vergabe von 6 Goldene Nicas, 12 Auszeichnungen, 1 [the next idea] Grant und 72 Anerkennungen entschieden.

Es ergehen 117.500 Euro Preisgeld an die GewinnerInnen. Darüber hinaus ist in diesem Jahr erstmals der Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN Award vergeben worden, das neue von CERN und Ars Electronica ins Leben gerufene Artist-in-Residence-Programm.
