We are here - Opening Festival Ars Electronica 2013

Like the 2013 Ars Electronica Festival itself, a long gestation period has also preceded Wir sind hier (We Are Here), the live performance in Linz’s Tabakfabrik that will kick off this year’s conclave. Since mid-July, the website www.wir-sind-hier.org has been the hub of the cross-medial art project launched by artist, university instructor and software entrepreneur Salvatore Vanasco (IT/DE).

Opposition to Surveillance

Here, Vanasco and his numerous cohorts have been publishing the project’s themes, putting them up for discussion and providing updates about ongoing actions. The target audience of Wir sind hier is people who oppose the government’s data retention efforts, PRISM and the many other forms of digital surveillance and censorship, and people who refuse to yield to the sense of hopelessness and the indifference that come with this territory.
A Feeling of Uneasiness

The festival’s opening ceremony will also call to mind what surveillance and censorship can lead to. Attendees will quickly be overcome by a vague feeling of apprehension—and this is utterly intentional. Surveillance cameras keeping an eye on everyone present dot the perimeter. Other details also strongly suggest that these proceedings are under total surveillance. And in the middle of the courtyard: a statue made of data storage media. What’s up with this?

80 Years after the First Nazi Book Burnings

Suddenly, masked figures intrude into the assembled throng and begin dividing people up into groups. The music, familiar oldies at first, turns into earsplitting noise. A little girl, her face displayed on a jumbo-format screen, begins reading a text aloud. We are reminded of the book burning on May 10, 1933, when an estimated 20,000 volumes went up in flames in the middle of Berlin. And over the course of the performance—including a fly-by of the Ars Electronica Futurelab’s quadcopter swarm—we are made cognizant in no uncertain terms of dangerous tendencies in today’s control-oriented society.

GET LOUD

Another way to get involved is by joining the Wir-sind-hier chorus. All are invited to read a short excerpt from Bertolt Brecht’s 1925 poem “Gegen Verführung” (Against Seduction) and upload their words in the form of a short video to the project website. Together, these many voices will form a chorus whose debut will also be part of the show at the Tabakfabrik.

The project producers are also endeavoring to capture the sounds of the destruction of a culture—from the impact of a wrecking ball to the crackling of burning paper and the electronic beep of an error message. Composer FM Einheit (DE) will use them as part of the soundtrack of the live show in Linz.

With Jovica Aleksis (DE), Gözen Atila (TR), Ulé Barcelos (PT), Dominik Berg (DE), Matti Casper Blunck (DE), Rica Blunck (DE), Yoko Gretel Blunck (DE), Claudius Brodmann (DE), Matthias David (DE), Elisa de Paolis (IT), Daniela Dibelius (DE), FM Einheit (DE), Stephanie Geiger (DE), Marcus Jäger (DE), Craig Johnson (NZ), Johannes Kirchner (DE), Francesca Kühlers (US), Traute Kühlers (DE), Jan Lachenmayer (DE), Sybille Luhmann (NL), Andy Müller-Maguhn (DE), Timo Maier (DE), Jürgen Mertens (DE), Steffen Neubauer (DE), Kien Nguyen (DE), Felix Ostrowski (DE), Bilgehan Öziş (TR), Laszlo Puskas (DE), Rafa Quinonero (ES), Ludwig Seyfarth (DE), Rolf Wolkenstein (DE), Cornelia Wunderlich (DE), Laura Zidda (IT).

voestalpine Soundcloud 2013 - Bruckner lives!

Sat 7.9. 20:00
Donaupark

With dramatized scenes, excerpts from his impressive musical oeuvre, and the voice of Harald Serafin, the voestalpine Klangwolke will bring Anton Bruckner to life in 2013.

Parov Stelar will musically update the great composer, and the Ars Electronica Futurelab is contributing a smartphone app to enable audience members to browse through Bruckner’s diary during the weeks leading up to the spectacle. Users can find out about the facts & circumstances of the composer’s life as he went about his creative work. The application cites the original diary entries conscientiously recorded by the great man, and places them in their proper historical context. The result is a detailed picture of Bruckner’s world and of the many highs and lows that characterized his life.

The World’s Largest Smartphone Orchestra

The second part of the app gets deployed during the Klangwolke itself. “Alle Menschen werden Bruckner” transforms spectators’ smartphones and tablets into musical instruments, and unites them into the world’s largest smartphone orchestra, which will play the opening notes of Bruckner’s 4th Symphony together with the Bruckner Orchester Linz. And all of it via live stream on the internet. Who knows—maybe Anton Bruckner will even be listening in?

The Aural-Memory-Machine

Sa 7. 9. 12:00 – 17:00, 20:00-23:00, Live-Performance: 23:00 – 24:00
Mariendom

Wolfgang Fadi Dorninger’s Aural Memory Machine is an six-channel sound installation. Festivalgoers and other visitors to Linz’s St. Mary’s Cathedral—with or without a musical background or technical skills—are the ones who play it. All they have to do is enter any text they want using a Midi keyboard at one of eight terminals on site. In real time, the texts launch field recordings of the acoustic surroundings, which are grouped into various thematic clusters.

Text or Sound – or Both?

Up to eight sound designers can simultaneously explore the potential of the Aural Memory Machine. They must constantly decide whether they want to produce text or code, or participate in the design of a temporary acoustic environment in the Cathedral—or both.

Nightly Concert

The culminating highlight is a nightly concert by Wolfgang Fadi Dorninger, Petra Anlanger (AT), Richard Eigner (AT), Georg Edlinger (AT), Volker Kagerer (AT) and Wolfgang Kreuzhuber (AT) and associates, in which they use the same instruments as visitors but play a predetermined repertoire: selected texts from the Ars Electronica Catalog.

Huang Yi & KUKA

Huang Yi & KUKA represents the fulfillment of a lifelong interest in the partnership between humans and robots. Huang Yi, a dancer and choreographer, has created dance works that fuse technology and machinery with rich imagery, including a computerized violin he invented himself in Symphony Project I Violin (2010). His multiple talents in the fields of photography, videography and mechanics can be seen in his choreography that goes far beyond any standard performing art production. He is adept at incorporating multi-layered images and delicate body movement.

Dancing like a Machine

Huang Yi has won the Taipei Digital Art Performance Award twice and is known for his performance experiments, his speed and his precision in dance. His pure movement choreographies evoked the praise of the New York Times, which referred to him as “a spinning machine of a dance with near-continual motion.” Huang creates works as if data was flowing through his limbs and mind, and he is the programmer of the body. While the world was looking at robots as tools, Huang Yi looked at himself and realized that he was a tool for dance. He reflected on how to visualize humanity, drawing upon new concepts and new technologies. The Taiwan KUKA Company didn’t just ‘lend a hand’, it literally ‘lent an arm’ to help Huang Yi realize his creative vision, making it possible for Huang to embark on a dance journey with the robotic arm, KUKA.

“Dancing face to face with a KUKA robot is like looking at my face in a mirror. I make KUKA mimic my movements, and I learn from him, I make myself dance like a machine.”

Animation Festival

The works screened by the Ars Electronica Animation Festival have been selected from among the most outstanding entries to this year’s Prix Ars Electronica. They display excellence with respect to both content and design, and impressively get across both how expansively the genre has grown as well as the extent to which it already pervades our everyday life—in visible form as digital animation or disguised as simulation.

A Broad Spectrum

In addition to the entertainment industry and computer gaming sector, moving pictures from the computer have long been mainstays in art, industry and science. Accordingly diversified are the 10 programs of this year’s Ars Electronica Animation Festival—including traditional narrative features, abstract experimental works, interactive films, installations and façade projections.
One program lineup features terriffic works of computer animation submitted to the Prix u19 – CREATE YOUR WORLD category; another showcases the best of the Japan Media Arts Festival.

The Individual Lineups

— The Experimental program is a collection of innovative design forays in various forms and genres—for instance, works produced in blog format as serial animation by multiple artists.
Music & Images showcases the various modes of interplaying sights and sounds: experimental works configuring interaction between the image and the audio as well as conventional music videos.
— The Narration program spotlights the fact that the short narrative film has carved out a place for itself in the field of computer animation and in digital filmmaking as a whole in recent years.
— The films selected for the Mental States lineup describe sensitive and highly personal mental states and give accounts of people in states of acute emergency.
Sex and Violence: Sexual obsessions, violent fantasies, blood, death and persecution dominate the Late Night lineup. Appropriate for viewers with strong nerves!
— The works screened in Advertisement & VFX highlight the possibilities that have been opened up by open source thinking, and the alternatives to major studio productions in the film industry and the computer game sector.
— High-performance projection technology and software packages have made it possible to bring excellent 3-D visualizations to urban public spaces. Expanded Digital Animation offers a taste.
Memories showcases what has always been animation’s strong suit: the visualization of worlds of feeling and remembrance.

There’s a detailed and comprehensive program brochure especially for the Ars Electronica Animation Festival.

Koenigleopold (AT)

Uncompromising, provocative insanity has been Koenigleopold’s trademark since 2011. The duo consists of Lukas König, who plays bass and percussion simultaneously, and Leo Riegler, DJ, MC, clarinetist, guitarist, singer and electronics man. As one of today’s most controversial acts on the music scene, Koenigleopold knows how to get instant audience reactions—making them laugh; making them appalled at what they’re witnessing.

The Future Sound presents: Camila Fuchs (UK), Anna Leiser (AT)

The London duo Camila Fuchs brings together finely spun electronic sound fabrics and unique, catchy vocals. Anna Leiser, a part of Vienna’s very active Bebop Rodeo collective, is always good for an evening of eclectic future sounds. Additional guests: Abby Lee Tee (AT) and F!no (AT).
Fri 6. 9.

the empress club presents: Sick Girls (DE), That Fucking Sara (DK/DE), NoisyBoy (AT)

The Sick Girls have been around since 2004, providing the world’s clubs with a synthesis of British grime, Dubstep and Bass on one hand and Gangsta Rap, B-more and Digi-Dancehall on the other.

That Fucking Sara has been a fixture at the turntables since the 1990s. She can look back on lots of tours and festivals, serving up Hip-Hop spiced with Disco, Old School Electro, Soul and Funk.
The warm-up act is NoisyBoy a.k.a. Selecta Ufuk, with one of his refreshing sets featuring a crossover mix of subgenres such as Moombahton and Trap & Tropical.

Pd~graz/linz meets Shu Lea Cheang (TW), Wanda & Nova deViator (SI)

Media artist Shu Lea Cheang invites the Pd~community in Graz and Linz to the main hall of Stadtwerkstatt to contribute their visual and acoustic input to a 70-minute nonstop hyper-jam session. The motto: LIVE CODE LIVE SPAM. At Midnight, Cheang will screen her cyberpunk sci-fi porno I.K.U. – This is not love. This is sex.

Wanda & Nova deViator purvey contemporary electronic music that’s so full of tonal diversity that it defies genre categorization, even if audiences can’t fail to notice her roots in British sound.

The Memory of Le Sacre du Printemps

Dennis Russell Davies (US/AT), Maki Namekawa (JP/AT)

With its uninhibited and unmistakable suggestions of the destruction of the Old World, the Paris premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps was a scandal of epic proportions. To mark the 100th anniversary of this milestone in music history, Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa will play the version for four hands on the piano in Deep Space. It demands a masterful—nothing less than acrobatic—performance by the duo, and displays the rhythmic furor of the piece
much more clearly than the orchestral version.

Racing Fingers

The drama of this physical performance is a consummate visual attraction. This raw material captured by Actioncam is simultaneously the leitmotif for the real-time visualizations of the concert. It will be accompanied by historical images from the Library of Congress and digital graphics produced directly from the Bösendorfer grand piano on stage.

Fri 6.9., Sun 8.9., Mon 9.9. 16:30

Resonate

Aakash Odedra (UK), Lewis Major (AU)

Dancer Aakash Odedra (UK) and choreographer Lewis Major (AU) approached the Ars Electronica Futurelab with a really fascinating concept. They were interested in investigating whether and how it would be possible to audiovisually and cybernetically represent the distorted, chaotic way people with legasthenia experience language and literature.

Dancing Legasthenia

The outcome was an experimental joint venture. Odedra & Major and a Futurelab team tested a whole array of tools and methods–tracking technologies, projections, visualizations and even wind machines–and created an extraordinary dance performance piece. Resonate will premiere at the 2013 Ars Electronica Festival.

Ars Electronica: At the Flea Market

Without making a big deal about it, Ars Electronica is joining in the vibrant hustle & bustle at Linz’s traditional Saturday morning flea market. The Festival aims to keep a low profile in this colorful showcase of the culture of everyday life in bygone days, amidst the buyers and sellers of artifacts and memorabilia from yesterday and yesteryear. The odd assortment of merchandise that the Ars Electronica sales force will be hawking is meant as a flea that’s got a lot of jump and bite in it. On Festival Saturday on Linz’s Main Square, you can go through the whole lot with a fine-tooth comb.
