(Linz, February 7, 2014) Surveillance and security on the Web are the focal-point themes at the next Science Days this coming weekend at the Ars Electronica Center. Speeches and tours will acquaint experienced internet users with how to protect their private sphere, and show how technological innovations are changing everyday life. Highlights include artistic approaches to the subject of data storage, and “Anatta,” a don’t-miss dance performance staged on both Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 PM in Deep Space.

This presentation features artistic approaches to data storage. Stefan Tiefengraber, a media artist currently enrolled in Linz Art University’s Time-based and Interactive Media program, will elaborate on three of his works—“User Generated Server Destruction,” “Your Unerasable Text” and “Data Distortion Drawing Machine”—that are currently on display in the Ars Electronica Center’s TIME OUT .01 exhibition.
Dance performance: Anatta
Saturday & Sunday, February 8-9, 2:30-3 PM
“Anatta” is an impressive dance performance created by Viktor Delev (MK/AT). It brings together interactive technology and performative art in such a way that neither element dictates how the other proceeds. Via laser-tracking, the mostly monochrome projections on the installation space’s walls and floor react to the movements of dancer Joanna Gruberska (PL) and vice-versa. The result is reciprocal interplay among the human body, the projection and the performance space, whereby the boundary between action and reaction becomes blurred.

Open WLANs, malware, passwords, smartphones, cloud computing services, anonymous surfing, e-mail, data theft—where is danger lurking when you use the internet? What should be avoided and what should be kept in mind to protect ones personal data? Robert Kolmhofer, professor in the Department of Secure Information Systems at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus, will offer a few words to the wise!

This tour of the exhibition “Out of Control – What the Internet Knows about You” will demonstrate how technological changes impacting the internet and telecommunications are not only making everyday life easier; they’re also considerably narrowing our private sphere.
