Ars Electronica Blog: Robert Kolmhofer of Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences Campus Hagenberg about Internet Security
(Linz, June 15, 2015) Surveillance and data security occupy the focal point at Science Days this coming weekend. Visitors are cordially invited to see for themselves all the traces they leave behind as they wend their way through the internet. Specialists from the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus will be on hand to provide information about the risks that modern telecommunications technologies entail. And this is a great chance to check out new installations in the “Out of Control – What the Internet Knows about You” exhibition and find out how well your own data is protected.

Seeing and Being Seen

Networked digital technologies not only offer comprehensive access to knowledge; they also open users up to attacks on their private sphere. This workshop lets participants get acquainted with their own Web presence, create a photo collage as a representation of their online ego, and produce a stencil they can use to leave behind their image where they want it to persist.
Guided tour: “I Am Data”

Does an “I” exist in virtual space as a graphic representation of an internet user’s online self? This tour presents works by artists who have dealt with this question.
Secure Use of Modern Telecommunications Technologies
Sunday, June 21 / 4-5:30 PM
Robert Kolmhofer, Professor of Secure Information Systems at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences in Hagenberg, will discuss the risks of using modern telecommunications technologies. He’ll point out the hazards that users of a PC, smartphone or tablet face, and demonstrate ways they can protect themselves.
Out of Control – What the Internet Knows about You
The new installations in this exhibition premiere on Thursday, June 18th. This diverse lineup lets visitors put their own personal data security to the test.
Science Days
Visitors to the Ars Electronica Center have no doubt noticed that the various exhibition spaces provide a wide variety of opportunities for hands-on experience and experimentation, and that there are lots of themes that would be interesting to delve into in greater detail. Science Days invites young people and grown-ups to engage in a more comprehensive encounter with significant topics.
