Human Bodies: The Universe Within at Deep Space in the Ars Electronica Center
(Linz, November 10, 2015) The amazing universe within the human body will occupy the focal point at the Ars Electronica Center this weekend, Saturday & Sunday, November 15th. At the new Deep Space 8K, visitors can behold the anatomy theater of the future and take a layer-by-layer look at organs, muscles, bones, the cardiovascular system and the body’s network of nerves. Dr. Franz Fellner of Linz General Hospital will kick things off on Thursday at 8 PM (and continue on Saturday at 1 & 3 PM) with a demonstration of new forms of anatomical visualizations that provide photorealistic images of structures and processes inside the human body. On Sunday beginning at 3 PM, Dr. Bernd Lamprecht of Linz General Hospital will offer some valuable insights into the lungs, how they work and potential threats. The lineup also includes guided tours and speeches that elaborate on imaging procedures of the past and present, as well as high-tech devices that can take over various bodily functions.
Deep Space LIVE: The Universe Within – Cinematic Rendering

Pictures made inside the body enable us to better understand human anatomy. They’re provided by imaging procedures such as computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR). Visitors to “The Universe Within” will get acquainted with new methods of teaching anatomy and also learn how technologies developed in the animation industry have yielded spinoffs that are revolutionizing medical imaging.
Guided Tour: Depicting the Human Body
Saturday, November 14 / 4:30-5:15 PM / BrainLab
This guided tour through the BrainLab focuses on imaging procedures from the past and present. In bygone days, it took a scalpel and a paintbrush to depict the interior of the human body. Now, it’s done with a solenoid and a high-performance computer.
Speech: From OUT OF ORDER back to a Life of Independence
Sunday, November 15 / 1-2 PM / Deep Space / with Gerhard Nussbaum
Accident victims suffering from paraplegia or severely impaired hearing and vision are the subject of a speech by Gerhard Nussbaum, assistant director of the Competence Network Information Technology to Support the Integration of People with Disabilities. He’ll go into detail about various technological aids, discuss their benefits and limitations, and describe the current state of R&D in this field.

Sunday, November 15 / 3-4 PM / Deep Space / with Dr. Bernd Lamprecht of Linz General Hospital
On Sunday, November 15th at 3 PM, Dr. Bernd Lamprecht, director of respiratory medicine at Linz General Hospital, will deliver an address that’s not just a bunch of hot air! He’ll describe the lungs’ function and demonstrate how they’re endangered by such things as gasses, vapors, smoke and particulate matter.
Guided Tour: Human & Machine
Sunday, November 15 / 4:30-5:15 PM
On this tour through the medical section of the RoboLab, visitors—both young and old—will find out how human bodily functions can be assisted or even assumed by machines. The tour gets underway at 4:30 PM.
