Vacation Activities at the Ars Electronica Center
(Linz, July 11, 2016) The Ars Electronica Center’s jam-packed lineup of fun activities is a great way to keep the summertime blues at bay while school’s out! The colorful schedule of activities includes experiments conducted on an industrial robot, getting hands-on experience with various measuring techniques, and finger painting via tablet with Deep Space 8K as your canvas. Please preregister by calling 0732.7272.51 or sending an e-mail to center@aec.at.
Here’s an overview of the offerings:
Measure Up! / for 8-12-year-olds, €17 per child
Tuesday, July 19 and Thursday, August 18, 2016 / 9:30 AM-1:30 PM
This workshop invites young researchers to measure their immediate surroundings in a variety of ways. Participants get acquainted with historical procedures that make it possible to measure the distance between two points without the aid of lasers, sound waves and radar. Plus, a tour of the Ars Electronica Center’s Spaceship Earth exhibition shows how satellites measure what’s happening on our planet.
Totally Plastic! / for 6-10-year-olds, €17 per child
Thursday, July 21, 2016 / 9:30 AM-1:30 PM
What do two-dimensional and three-dimensional actually mean? In this workshop, youngsters learn what dimensions are all about and experiment with various techniques and materials.
Summer Camp: Creative Robotics / for 12-14-year-olds
Wednesday to Friday / August 8-12, 2016 / 9:30 AM-12:30 PM
You know what an industrial robot is, don’t you? It works hard doing tough, repetitive jobs reliably. But now, it’s time for it to break out of the rut! You and your crew liberate the robot from its drudgery so it can secretly do something creative for a change—for instance, painting. But to keep anybody from noticing, you have to hack the system and use “littleBits” to create a new remote control.
What are those sounds you’re making?! / for 6-10-year-olds
Tuesday, August 16, 2016 / 9:30 AM-1:30 PM
Coughing, clapping, the growling of your stomach—what interesting noises your body makes! Record them in the SoundLab, the Ars Electronica Center’s in-house sound studio and, while you’re at it, discover the acoustic world inside the museum. With the help of a computer, even bananas and flowers make music!
Space Painting / for 8-12-year-olds
Tuesday, August 23, 2016 / 9:30 AM-1:30 PM
Wouldn’t it be great if you could instantaneously transform images in your mind into full-color, jumbo-format motion pictures? Now, an app named Tagtool makes it possible. Instead of paint you use a tablet, instead of a brush, your finger, and instead of a canvas, you simply paint space—the Ars Electronica Center’s Deep Space. And just to reassure concerned parents: there’s no chance of your child dripping oil paint on his/her adorable new jumper!
