(Athens/Linz, November 8, 2016) The Prix Ars Electronica’s Hybrid category has been honoring excellence in this artistic genre since 2007. The competition focuses on exciting, innovative art projects which display a processual character and an interdisciplinary approach that transcend the limits of conventional art categories. Hybrid spotlights trailblazing amalgamations of disparate media and genres, violations of the boundaries separating art and science, manifestations of social and political commitment—in short, it’s a showcase of new means of artistic expression. A representative selection of 16 outstanding works of hybrid art can now be seen in “HYBRIDS – On the Borderline between Art and Technology,” an exhibition running at the Onassis Cultural Centre–Athens. This show curated by Ars Electronica and the Onassis Cultural Foundation is being supplemented by workshops and a series of presentations. “HYBRIDS” runs until January 15, 2017.
Interdisciplinary, processual, simultaneous – like the world we live in
An exhibition having to do with hybrid art simply can’t content itself with being a finished, discrete presentation; it has to consist of ongoing processes and works in progress, and has to invite installation visitors to participate, to take a hands-on approach, to test and experiment. Accordingly, the exhibition itself is just as interdisciplinary, processual and simultaneous as the individual projects and processes. The curators have divided the show into three substantive themes: Hybrid Realities investigates the simultaneity of (data) systems; Mankind & Utopia focuses on the interface of art and science; and Hybrid remixed is a matter of social critique.

The Onassis Cultural Centre–Athens
The Onassis Cultural Centre-Athens was inaugurated in December 2010 as a new cultural site accessible to all. Its mission is the promotion of modern cultural expression, the support of new Greek artists, the cultivation of international collaborations, education and lifelong learning, as well as the co-existence and interaction of sciences, innovation and the arts. The interior of the Onassis Cultural Centre includes 18,000 m2 of approximately extending over seven floors and nine underground levels. The building consists of the 880-seat Aristotle Onassis Center Stage appropriately designed for theatrical, symphonic orchestra, opera and dance performances, cinema, lectures and conferences, the 220-seat Christina Onassis Hall suitable for theatrical, musical or dance productions, lectures and special cinematic features (multimedia, virtual reality), the Alexander Onassis Exhibition Hall covering 600 m2, an open-air theater, a restaurant and a bar.
