(Berlin/Linz, December 21, 2016) SAP has been working together with the Ars Electronica Futurelab for 15 years. The software giant regularly commissions the Linz-based media lab to handle the artistic and technical implementation of prestige projects. The latest one just made its public debut: the futuristic DATA SPACE at Rosenthalerstraße 38 in Berlin Mitte, SAP’s new regional headquarters in the capital.

DATA SPACE offers innovative, creative people inspiring surroundings and ambience. It’s a gathering place for anyone interested in digital transformation. In DATA SPACE, they can network, collaborate and get together for a meal. DATA SPACE encompasses four domains in a single location: the DATA HALL, the DATA KITCHEN, the DATA HUB and the DATA ROOM. The Ars Electronica Futurelab played a major part in the design of the DATA KITCHEN and the DATA ROOM.
DATA ROOM – Where creative sparks fly
For the design of the DATA ROOM, the Ars Electronica Futurelab came up with a completely novel workshop setting where the atmosphere is highly conducive to creative work. The centerpiece is a data table that generates chains of associations. It has a surface on which content can be moved around like on a tablet. Terminology and information in graphic or textual form are entered without a physical interface by means of a QR Code that’s valid during a particular timeframe. Each entry evokes a chain of associations that are the result of an algorithm programmed by the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The algorithm doesn’t conduct a search according to the usual parameters; instead, it outputs pairs of terms and images like in brainstorming.
The Foodwall – Pleasure at the push of a button
In the DATA KITCHEN, healthy, freshly prepared food and beverages are first pre-ordered via the establishment’s website or app, and the check is paid on site via the diner’s own smartphone. Once the dishes are ready, guests pick up their orders from the so-called Foodwall containing 20 dispensing boxes. They’re filled from the kitchen side by service personnel; on the dining room side, customers use their smartphone to open the box containing their orders. As soon as a box is filled, the diner’s name appears on its transparent glass front along with an abstract visualization of the dishes ordered that serves as a stylish culinary avatar. The DATA KITCHEN concept comes from star Berlin restaurateur Heinz Gindullis aka Cookie. The futuristic Foodwall was designed by the Ars Electronica Futurelab.
The Ars Electronica Futurelab
