Zeroing in on Weak Spots in Energy Consumption

Zeroing in on Weak Spots in Energy Consumption

(Linz, September 21, 2017) A new tool that depicts the energy usage of entire sections of a city will be featured in a presentation at the Ars Electronica Center’s Deep Space 8K this Wednesday, September 27th. A dashboard the Ars Electronica FutureLab helped develop in conjunction with E_PROFIL and that is being implemented on a test basis in two Linz neighborhoods, Kleinmünchen and Franckviertel, can point out weak spots in the delivery and usage of energy. E_PROFIL thus creates the basis for effective energy usage on the neighborhood level and for measures to reduce energy consumption. The presentation begins at 5 PM.

E_PROFIL is a joint effort of the Ars Electronica Futurelab, the Centre of Regional Science (Department of Spatial Planning) at the Vienna University of Technology, the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the City of Linz’s Department of Urban Development, Linz AG [local utility] and mecca consulting [engineering firm].

E_PROFIL Benefits the Environment and Consumers

Achieving our national and international climate policy goals calls for implementing numerous measures, not the least of which focus on cities and individual parts of town. In this context, the E_PROFIL project has been focusing on the energy-based urban renewal of city neighborhoods. Since October 2015, the project’s partners and associates in academia and the private sector have regularly staged workshops and conferences featuring experts in a broad spectrum of fields. The results that emerged at these gatherings subsequently flowed into the development of several tools that make it possible to continuously measure various energy usage parameter and, in turn, to institute effective measures conducive to an improved balance sheet for the environment and for energy customers.

The research project E_Profil – Neighborhood Profiles for Optimized Energy-based Transformation Processes has been subsidized by the FFG–Austrian Research Promotion Agency’s City of the Future program.
City of the Future is a research & technology program of the BMVIT–Austrian Federal Ministry of Transportation, Innovation and Technology carried out under the auspices of the FFG, the Austria Wirtschaftsservice Gesellschaft mbH and the Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Umwelt und Technik.
