Christmas Break at the Ars Electronica Center
(Linz, December 19, 2017) Our young visitors are in for a treat with all the fun activities the Ars Electronica Center has lined up while school’s out for the holidays! There’s something for everybody—designing digital creatures on a computer screen and then cutting them out by laser, constructing three-dimensional objects that you can really turn out with a 3-D printer, producing your own film including the soundtrack, and attending quadcopter flight school to acquire drone piloting skills. There’s educational and entertaining fun for all! These activities are designed for youngsters 7 years of age and older.
Program overview:
Mythical Creatures
Thursday, December 28, 2017 / 9:30 AM-12:30 PM
This workshop in the Ars Electronica Center’s FabLab shows 7-10-year-olds how to invent, draw and cut out mythical creatures, and also design suitable backgrounds for their creations. The tools involved include paper and scissors as well as computer screens, special pens and a laser cutter. Finally, young adventurers can dream up narratives starring their creature, which they get to take home with them.
High-tech Plastique

Here, kids learn to design and construct three-dimensional objects with a 3-D printer. 14-16-year-olds begin by modeling simple shapes and then more on to more complex forms. The creations can then be generated on a 3-D printer.
Schnitt happens
Wednesday, January 3, 2018 / 9:30 AM-12:30 PM
This workshop is just the thing for filmmakers age 9-11. A fully equipped sound studio, a greenbox, an animation lab and other sophisticated technology enable up-and-coming video artists to produce their own clips complete with a custom-made soundtrack.
Quadcopter Flight School
Thursday, January 4, 2018 / 1:30-4:30 PM
Unmanned aerial vehicles have been flying off store shelves in recent years! The insurance industry trade association claims 40,000 of them were sold in Austria in 2016 alone. 8-11-year-olds can learn to pilot a drone and put their skills to the test in an obstacle course. They’ll also learn how these drones are being used in science, the military, art and entertainment.
