Deep Space LIVE: Forum Metall Linz – 40 Years: 1977-2017

(Linz, April 8, 2018) Forum Metall Linz, a collection of large metal sculptures arrayed on the south bank of the Danube in Linz, celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. At the next Deep Space LIVE this Thursday, April 12th at 7 PM, Helmuth Gsöllpointner, initiator of Forum Metall Linz, and Thomas Redl, publisher of fair – Magazine for Art and Architecture, will talk about the significance for Linz of this project that endowed the city with a sustainable cultural profile and established an identity that shaped its subsequent cultural development. Current images of the metal sculptures will be juxtaposed to historical photos taken at the opening in 1977.
Forum Metall Linz
Linz’s first alfresco museum opened on September 12, 1977 in riverside Donaupark. The featured works are a representative selection of abstract sculptures from the 1960s and ‘70s. Forum Metall also offered wide-ranging insights into the expressive possibilities that working with iron, steel and aluminum opened up to artists. At the same time, spotlighting metal as a material for the creation of works of art underscored its importance for Austria’s Steel City. Helmuth Gsöllpointner, then-chancellor of Linz Art University, and Peter Baum, former director of the city’s Neue Galerie, conceived and organized the project and served as its artistic directors.
