Open Call for Artist Residency
(Linz/Edinburgh, September 18, 2019) Which values should AI systems internalize and which prejudices could they derive from interaction with us humans? How could we make AI systems more transparent and understand how they come to their recommendations? And on what basis could we, as a society, define areas that we do not consider suitable for the use of AI applications?
Within the framework of the “European ARTificial Intelligence Lab” – AI Lab for short – Ars Electronica and the Experiential AI research centre at the Edinburgh Futures Institute – part of the University of Edinburgh – are now announcing a residency for artists on the theme of “Entanglements – fair, moral and transparent AI.” Applications will be accepted until October 29, 2019.
Experiential AI
Artists can contribute something vital to our future living with AI. Artists often experiment with the social and ethical consequences of technology. Artists understand our values and prejudices as dynamic and not static variables that need to be constantly questioned. AI can distort the truth, or it can create unimaginable beauty, largely due to the way it amplifies human bias and prejudice. The idea behind Experiential AI is that art can help counteract the mystification of AI and prepare the ground for an objective discourse on our future. Within the framework of the residency jointly announced by Ars Electronica and Edinburgh Futures Institute, artists will therefore be given the opportunity to experiment with new concepts, data and technologies. The aim is to promote artistic and experiential work that opens up future perspectives for ethical and responsible applications of AI and involves both AI developers and the general public.

One Residency – Two Stays
In the first half of 2020, a 4- to 8-week stay at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, the Bayes Centre – both part of the University of Edinburgh – and the Robotarium – a joint project between the Universities of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt – in Edinburgh, Scotland, is planned. A one-month production residency at the Ars Electronica Futurelab in Linz, Austria, will follow by the end of August 2020 at the latest. The results will then be presented and discussed at the Ars Electronica Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival. European ARTificial Intelligence Lab
The AI Lab – Residency Program “European ARTificial Intelligence Lab. Experiential AI Artist Residency” is offered within the framework of the European ARTificial Intelligence Lab – AI Lab for short. The network, initiated by Ars Electronica in 2018, comprises 14 renowned institutions from the fields of art and science throughout Europe. The AI Lab is aimed at artists who work with AI applications and/or reflect on their use and effects on our society. The initiative is financed by the Creative Europe Program of the European Union.
Experiential AI at Edinburgh Futures Institute
Experiential AI is a new programme and centre on the art, ethics and science of artificial intelligence at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. It aims to support the creation of significant artistic works, and to inspire radically new concepts and paradigms on ethical and responsible AI. It is a partnership between the Edinburgh Futures Institute, Bayes Centre, Informatics and Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh and the Robotarium, a joint project between the Universities of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt. It is supported by the Data-Driven Innovation programme of the South East Scotland City and Region Deal.
