Brains for Everybody: Music’s Influence on the Brain
Deep Space LIVE: Upper Austria in the Light of Invisible Lasers

(Linz, October 15, 2012) A diversified program of fascinating events awaits visitors to the Ars Electronica Center this Thursday evening, October 18, 2012. Kicking things off at 6:30 PM is neuroscientist Manuela Mazedonia’s latest presentation in the Brains for Everybody series. She’ll discuss the extent to which learning a musical instrument at an early age fosters a child’s linguistic skills and how music is processed by the brain. Taking over at 8 PM are Erwin Kraus and Christian Greifeneder from the Province of Upper Austria’s Bureau of Geoinformation and Real Estate. They used lasers to create three-dimensional models of the regional topography that can help identify centuries-old defensive emplacements and roads. Then, false color aerial imagery near the infrared range of the spectrum then delivers information about the vitality of the area’s vegetation.
Advances in Brain Research
More and more people are finding out about the exciting advances being made in brain research. The main reason for this heightened interest is the modern imaging technology that lets us see how the brain actually works. These diverse and colorful depictions of neuronal activities have heightened people’s curiosity and elicited fascination for phenomena that were previously hidden from our view. In May and June, the Ars Electronica Center Linz is hosting a lecture series about the brain by Manuela Macedonia, a neuroscientist on the staff of the Max Planck Institute Leipzig. She also initiated the “Neuroscience for You” project that makes authoritative information about brain research available to laypeople.

Deep Space LIVE
The Ars Electronica Center is now hosting a Deep Space LIVE event every Thursday (except holidays) at 8 PM. Each presentation will feature ultra-high-definition imagery in 16×9-meter format and will be accompanied by expert commentary, entertaining stand-up repartee, and musical improvisation. Whether great works from the history of art, space travel, journeys of discovery in the Nanoworld, or a live concert is what you’ve come to behold, Deep Space LIVE stands for enlightening entertainment amidst breathtaking worlds of imagery. Admission is €2. Holders of a valid Museum ticket are admitted free of charge.
