World premiere at Linz’s Musiktheater
Ars Electronica Futurelab Visualizes TOSCA’s “Odeon”
(Linz, April 17, 2013) Today’s world premiere of “Odeon” by TOSCA at Linz’s newly-opened Musiktheater promises two hours full of supreme audiovisual artistry. The music and sound environments were created by Rupert Huber and Richard Dorfmeister (aka TOSCA); the visualizations are the work of the Ars Electronica Futurelab. The curtain goes up at 7:30 PM.
TOSCAs Extraordinary Universe of Sound
Together with four vocalists, Sarah Callier (BE), Robert Gallagher (GB), Rodney Hunter (AT) and Jay Jay Jones (USA), and Vienna’s K&K String Quartet, Rupert Huber and Richard Dorfmeister span a musical arc ranging from almost complete silence to complex vocal structures accompanied by strings and programmed rhythms. The classical instruments, voices and electronic sound effects engender an acoustic experience that unfolds a magic all its own.
Brilliant Visualization by the Ars Electronica Futurelab
Every single one of these musical configurations, each tonal event and every frequency, in turn, constitutes the input for visualization software that the Ars Electronica Futurelab developed especially for “Odeon.” It delivers visuals in real time to five light objects and a jumbo projection screen forming the stage’s backdrop. This visual language expresses the constantly shifting dualities of sound and silence, light and shadow. The stage set is immersed in monochrome hues to complement this piece’s essential skepticism, a fundamental attitude more akin to the blues.
On Tour Together
TOSCA and the Ars Electronica Futurelab are taking “Odeon” on the road together. The tour includes stops in Prague (April 29, 2013, Lucerna Music Bar), Budapest (April 30, 2013, A38), Graz (May 31, 2013, Spring Festival – Helmut List Halle) and Bratislava (June 21, 2013, City Beatz).
