Summer Vacation Program at the Ars Electronica Center Linz
(Linz, July 15, 2013) The great lineup of events at the Ars Electronica Center is the perfect way to keep the summertime blues at bay while school’s out! At Summer Camp, 5-14-year-olds can spend three successive mornings at the Ars Electronica Center. The activities include arts & crafts, sound mixing, science and high-tech research. Interactive-Creative Days features a lineup of entertaining, educational one-day workshops about shadow play, designing fantasy creatures, navigating quadcopters, using microscopes, programming robots, and lab work.
Here’s an overview of the whole program:
Summer Camp
Summer Camp at the Ars Electronica Center is for 5-14-year-olds who’d love to spend three successive mornings having fun doing arts & crafts, sound engineering, research and computer programming.
During summer break, 6x Wednesday-Friday, 9:30 AM-12:30 PM each day
Cost: €37 (1 module consisting of 3 sessions)

Ma Boter and Ro Schine (ages 7-10)
Programming robots is easy when you do it with LEGO WeDo. Whether it’s a crocodile, enchanting fairies or other fantastic creatures—at Ma Boter and Ro Schine, kids learn simple, fun ways to give free rein to their imagination!

Sound Factory (ages 11-14)
With a recording device in their backpack, kids go off in search of interesting sounds. Then, what they capture can be mixed into their own tracks in the Ars Electronica Center’s SoundLab. Sound artist Marco Palewicz will provide support as the participants tune in to, record and compose their pieces of sound art.

Elektri-tra-trödel (ages 5-8)
At Elektri-tra-trödel, little kids can build electrical fantasy devices that they can take home with them. Our young visitors find out what the insides of a computer look like, listen to the mysterious voices of machines, and discover where electrical current is hiding.

NEW: Space Explorer and World Surveyor (ages 11-14)
How could sailors and astronomers of bygone days measure the world? And how is it done nowadays? Check out old-fashioned low-tech equipment like a compass and then switch to the latest devices like a GPS receiver and digital maps. And show how the world would look if you could design it yourself.
Interactive-Creative Days
The one-day Interactive-Creative Days sessions feature cool workshops for 6-14-year-olds:

Shadow Plays & Reflections (ages 6-10)
Participants learn about the bright and dark secrets of light. Can you steer light or cover up shadows? Become a shadow catcher or a light hunter and create your own shadow monsters and mirror creatures.

All about Labs! (ages 10-14)
This is a great opportunity for kids to learn about working in a laboratory. But what actually is a lab? Who works there and what are their assignments? In the BioLab at the Ars Electronica Center, junior scientists learn to work with pipettes, isolate DNA from the mucus membrane inside their mouth, and clone plants.

FAB Fantasy Creatures (ages 6-10)
Use a rendering computer to design imaginary creatures and then operate a laser cutter to bring them to life on paper. Here, kids can learn to draw, cut and use the latest technology.

NEW: Quadcopter Flight School (ages 8-12)
Quadcopters are tiny drone whirlybirds. Here you can steer one through an obstacle course to test your piloting skill. Plus, you’ll learn a thing or two about the use of quadcopters in science, the military, art and entertainment.

Microcosmonauts (ages 6-10)
This workshop focuses on tiny objects invisible to the naked eye. Various microscopes with up to 1,000x magnification let you observe stuff like bacteria and skin cells.

NeXT TopRobot (ages 10-14)
How can robots be programmed, and how do these machines perceive and react to their surroundings? Students majoring in robotics at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Hagenberg Campus support participants in reconfiguring, expanding and programming LEGO NXT robots.

Fabulous Fabrication (ages 10-14)
At the Ars Electronica Center’s FabLab—the workshop of the future—10-14-year-olds can try their hand at designing and get hands-on experience with all sorts of interesting equipment. On a digital drawing board, you can render small decorative objects like keychain pendants, buttons and pins, and then turn them out with a laser cutter or a 3-D printer.
