Hans-Peter Bunge, professor for geophysics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universtät (LMU), Munich, demonstrates computer simulations which explain the convection processes inside the earth’s mantle.
Spectacular animations show that some cold plates within the earth move down into the core, while other warm areas rise to the boundaries of the earth’s mantle. Professor Bunge will explain the physical processes in more detail, as well as their effects on the geological evolution of our planet.
The simulations were performed on the supercomputer SuperMUC of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), led by Prof. Dieter Kranzlmüller, and visualized by Markus Wiedemann at the Center for Virtual Reality and Visualization (V2C).
