Chris Watson: Digital Musics Jury Member

Chris Watson (GB), founding member of Hafler Trio and former member of Cabaret Voltair, is a sound recordist with a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals, habitats and atmospheres around the world.

Chris Watson, who has been awarded a Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica 2000, is working for film and video production companies as well as for BBC wildlife documentaries and feature films. He says about his work:
'I am interested in recording animal sounds in close-up to try and reveal something of their individual beauty, rhythm, eloquence and sheer power. This can be difficult to achieve without causing disturbance to those animals or their habitats, so I have developed recording techniques to overcome this. Listening to the atmosphere from within an undisturbed, noise free habitat is a remarkable experience and one I wish to relate through my published recordings. I believe we are surrounded by highly developed and eloquent animal languages which we may be unable to comprehend, but can appreciate. Listening back to these sounds I am sometimes surprised by a particular detail, an overall clarity or musicality which can crystallise the spirit of that place and make a connection - and it does seem that the elements which make up the special characteristics of these places can be recorded and subsequently reproduced. They exist however whether we hear them or not. Close up details of messages that are beyond our reach, outside the circle of fire.'
