Video games as social phenomena is the research focus of Masuyama (Japan), a widely published writer, media theorist, professor, and producer of games for the Nintendo.

Hiroshi Masuyama (he never uses his full name outside Japan) has been involved in the videogame industry in Japan since 1985, first as a critic, later as a producer. Masuyama has been organizing 'Bit Generation'-exhibitions in Tokyo and Osaka for the last three years. 'Bit Generation 97' showed the history of the PC itself, the evolution of computer- and videogames, an introduction to the latest games and some future aspects like networking. 'Bit Generation 2000 TV GAMES' is an exhibition focused on the cultural aspect of videogames.
