Hiroshi Ishii: Interactive Art Jury Member

The work of Hiroshi Ishii (Japan /USA) of MIT Tangible Media Group focuses on the design of seamless interfaces between humans, digital information, and the physical environment.

It is the second time that Hiroshi Ishii is member of the Interactive Art Jury of Prix Ars Electronica. But it is not the first time that he is attending the Ars Electronica Festival: As early as 1997 he has presented his project pursuing a new vision of human computer interface, Tangible Bits he is developing at MIT Media Lab. 'Tangible Bits' allow users to 'grasp and manipulate' bits in the center of users' attention by coupling the bits with everyday physical objects and architectural surfaces. Normally the interaction with the user interfaces (GUI) is separated from the ordinary physical environment within we live and interact. This project aims at integrating the computational augmentations into the physical environment. In other words: It wants to bridge the gaps between both cyberspace and the physical environment, as well as the foreground and background of human activities.
