Stuart Maschwitz: Computer Animation / Visual Effects Jury Member

Stuart Maschwitz (USA) has been working for George Lucas' ILM for directors such as Steven Spielberg, Brian DePalma and of course George Lucas before setting up his independent film and production company The Orphanage. It is the first time that he is member of the Prix Ars Electronica Jury.

The idea behind The Orphanage is to give the public splashy computer-generated special effects they have come to crave, but in the service of telling a story - something Maschwitz clearly feels has been lost in formula-centric Hollywood. His first all-digital short was The Last Birthday Card, which he wrote, produced, and directed. His unique technical abilities allowed him not only to populate his film with spectacular visual effects, but also to elevate the look of the DV footage to something indistinguishable from film.
