bLectum from bLechdom: Digital Musics Jury Member

bLectum from bLechdom - the American laptop duo combines a whimsical sense, pop references, and a keen sense of show-womanship to DSP programming. They are member of the Digital Musics Jury of Prix Ars Electronica 2002.

How would you characterize the music you are doing? Where do you get your inspiration from?

bLectum from bLechdom: Our inspiration comes from within, from without, from each other, from quiet, from loud, from compulsion, from a love of being alive and the desire for things to survive and prosper and then let them die.

How is your working style? And your production modus? It seems that you are part of a very dense network (Lesser, Kid606 etc).

bLectum from bLechdom: We work on things separately, then bring them together and meld them / melt them down. We play live together for hours, mix it down to minutes or seconds. Bevin works with some old samplers (Dr Sample and Sampletrak, a Gameboy, and a very new laptop using Ableton's Live software as well as our old standard, free Protools and Peak. Kristin works with her computers in Max/MSP and Logic and ProTools).

It's true, we are part of a dense network of people, but musically I think we're often in our own little world, without too much overt influence from anyone in particular. But yes, we find alot of the people we're friends with to be musically inspirational.

You have put up you own label - haus de snaus (what a strange name!?) Why?

bLectum from bLechdom: We have an imaginary character called 'Snaus', a small rubbery rat with one hole for all biological functions. It needed a place to live, so we gave it a 'Haus'.

Why ' Haus' and not 'House'? Only because 'House' doesn't rhyme with Snaus, and 'Haus' does.

Actually, it's not a label, just the name of a CD, and a series of parties that we were throwing for a while. And 'de' means of.

In what direction will electronic music develop in the next few years?

bLectum from bLechdom: I have no idea! I look forward to it! I hope (and expect it to) knocks my socks off! I hope it causes us to feel more in our brains and hearts and help us understand better and deal with what the fuck is going on, these lives we live.

Last year you have been awarded a Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica. How do you feel about being in the jury yourselves?

bLectum from bLechdom: Never having been on a jury before, or really any other jury-like decision-making panel, or even imagining I would ever be on such a thing, it's something new and curious.

Giving people who make music opportunities to perform and cash to perpetuate their music-making habits is, in my book, always a good thing and I am happy to be a part of that.

Having to decide who gets prizes and who doesn't - that's the catch and the 'bitter' that you have to take with the 'batter'. I think it'll be fun and I look forward to all the listening and discussion involved. We will do our best!

What kind of music would you like to hear at Prix Ars Electronica? To which kind of music would you like to award a Golden Nica?

bLectum from bLechdom: I'd like to see the awards go to an aesthetically varied and exciting batch of stuff that has the ability to get all of us involved in the decision-making process excited - to have an appeal that people can see from a bunch of different angles - And I would like to see it go to people who will make good use of the money and exposure that Ars Electronica brings.
