Panic Room: Distinction / Computer Animation/Visual Effects
David Fincher's last film Panic Room shows previously non-existent image worlds. The French company BUF has been awarded a Distinction for these 'flying camera' visual effects in Prix Ars Electronica.
In the sequence that has been awarded a Distinction, a character tries to break-into a house. David Fincher wanted to follow the character, as he is progressing, from the inside of the house. The overall idea of this shot was to obtain a shot-sequence of 2 min 51.
For this process, BUF took still pictures on location of all sets of the house. Then, with these photo-references, BUF was able to reconstruct the various sets in 3D with modeling and mapping. The coherence of camera movements between computer-generated images and filmed images is due to the camera movements recreated in 3D.
Once David Fincher approved the camera movements and the timing of the shot, BUF took care of the rendering of the 3D shots, the atmospheric effects and the final compositing of the 3D elements in the filmed scenes.
