minials: Distinction / u19 – cybergeneration

In minials, a Flash animation, the group 'sofa23' from Graz (A) displays a refreshing approach to linking music and visuals interactively. It has been awarded a Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica's u19 category.

'sofa23' is a group of young people who are practically exploring the fields of video/film, multimedia and photography. 'sofa23' is a team of four - Ulrich Reiterer, Jona Hoier, Markus Murschitz and Milo Tesselaar; they all live, work and study in Graz. In its present form, the team has existed since spring 2001 and has been called 'sofa23' ever since.

The title minials was created from the words 'mini' und 'visuals'. It stands for the many small segments that flow into video or audio tracks. Our project is a Flash animation, combining video and audio tracks. There are eight buttons and each of them has been assigned an audio level and a video level. Each track and video loop was specially produced by us. By clicking on a button, the two levels – video track and audio track – are activated. Individual buttons can be active simultaneously, enabling the user to create his own music track.

The video consists of a single perspective and frame, although different scenes can be played into this frame.

The goal is to give users the chance to design their tracks and videos at least in part individually and so to discover the fun involved in working with the media of sound and film.
