I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is confused by the subject
of this year's symposium and can't really see any aspects of it that
could be of interest to a forum like Ars Electronica. What would we (as
artists, philosophers, scientists, engineers, or just ordinary thinking
people) ever want to get into a war over? Isn't it the InfoShare that is
our concern rather than the War?
Bush's early utopian vision of the Web that Rafael Lozano-Hemmer refered
to as 'an interconnected, interdependent hyperdimensional knowledge
structure' is actually happening, a lot of people are seriously working
towards it. Wouldn't this have been a more fruitful topic for the
symposium than the Infowar which, as Brian Molyneaux (good to see that
he is taking part again) suggested, is the sort of thing Pepsi and Coke
might fight out?
I asked a person who spends all his time at a computer what he thought
'infowar' might mean. He said 'Errrm... Trying to throw more
information at others than you get thrown at you?' Well, there is no
deep thought behind it, I just thought it was funny (reminded me of
stoning and bombardment with animals in Monty Python's 'Holy Grail')
but suggesting that this isn't really a burning issue for people likely
to get involved in this forum.
