September 4-9, 1999

Hello and welcome to the LifeScience Symposium of Ars Electronica 99.

Once again, the Ars Electronica hosts a net-symposium as an introduction and
complement to this year's symposium, which will focus on the subject of Life
Science and will be held on
September 5 and 6, 1999.

My name is Birgit Richard and I'll be the moderator for this year's on-line
net-symposium. Let me introduce myself first: I am a professor of New Media
at Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universitaet in Frankfurt. My main fields of
scientific research are the history and the aesthetics of new media and their
practical application, the aesthetics of contemporary youth cultures (youth
culture collection) and the images of life and death in real and virtual
worlds.

Now back to the Net-Symposium: As a starting point for Life Science, Gerfried
Stocker, the Director of Ars Electronica, the artist Eduardo Kac, the military
expert Georg Schoefbaenker and I have authored an initial statement defining
the conceptual territory of the net-symposium. These texts will be our point
of departure. All these Life Science texts are published in English and in
German. To maximize global participation in this net-symposium, we respectfully
request that all subsequent texts be submitted in English. This year's
net-symposium is an open affair. This does not mean that everything that is
posted appears on the online symposium. Since it is a moderated list, I try to
keep the focus on the topic of life science. Your opinion, question or
information about the position of life science in contemporary society is very
welcome. In case it does not fit into the discussion, I will ask you to
formulate your statement more precisely in order to keep the discussion going.

This year, there will be additional information in the so-called magazine,
where you will find a growing collection of news and articles concerning the
field of life science as a frequent media issue. Please check
http://www.aec.at/lifescience/magazine

The online discussion and the magazine will undoubtedly anticipate the live
discussions at the 1999 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz this September 4-9,
1999. Send your opening and/or ongoing remarks on LifeScience to:
lifescience@aec.at

It will be assumed that messages sent to this mail address are meant to be
distributed via the Ars Electronica website-questions or comments not meant
to be public should be addressed to me at: b.richard@kunst.uni-frankfurt.de

We are looking forward to your contributions. Thanking you in advance for your
thoughtful and stimulating participation, let's get on with the discussion!
