Christa Sommerer: Interactive Art Jury Member
Austrian artist Christa Sommerer has a long involvement with Prix Ars Electronica: In 1994 her interactive project A-Volve has been awarded a Golden Nica. In her works, situated at the nexus of Art, science and technology, she is investigating the creative process as such.
Together with Laurent Mignonneau the biologist Christa Sommerer is developing interactive environments based on simulations of artificial life, which involve the user in the creative process itself. In her projects she creates images that are not pre-programmed and pre-designed by the artist, but can emerge only through the interaction of the user with the inherent processes. Her works include among others Interactive Plant Growing, GENMA, Life Spacies, Haze Express (honorary mention at Prix Ars Electronica 99) and Verbarium. Currently, she is working on Riding the Net, where the user can interact with image and sound data derived from the Internet. Christa is Associate Professor at the IAMAS Graduate School of Media Arts and Sciences in Gifu, Japan, and Visiting Research Fellow at MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies.
