WikiMap – Knowledge Map

2005

We are flooded with information daily and yet we have relatively few instruments for filtering it or for producing subjective connections which would convert information into knowledge. What options for representing information are needed if we want to make the endless archives in the real world and on the web more usable?

With “WikiMap – Knowledge Maps”, we are presenting some of the new options available for representing, connecting and providing information. Linked maps of knowledge are displayed from very diverse fields of knowledge and social spheres. “Wikipedia” is exemplary in this context: with this project it becomes clear that the challenge involved in designing the knowledge spaces of tomorrow lies in making them “enterable” – i.e., “enterable” in terms of participation and design in accord with individual interests, capacities and means, allowing each person to create his own space. “WikiMap Linz” is a project inviting users to experiment with the possibilities of locating themselves in this new space. It is about the relationship between a city map as data landscape and the options for representing individual urban perspectives, which – as the project progresses – deposit themselves like layers and nets over the virtual “WikiMap Linz”.
