This symposium deals with the emancipation of the tools. The third information-based communications revolution has radically altered the character of the objects. The tool has risen from being an extension of the body to being a machine that processes symbols. The processing of symbols is no longer a privilege reserved for humans; machines are now capable performing this task also. Objects thereby become variables and autonomous agents, materialized chains of symbols that independently process symbols. Intelligent products demonstrate that we will remain handicapped without knowing it. Being handicapped as the avant-garde of design.

The interrelation of computers, architecture, city planning and electronic environment has lead to a radical change of aesthetic expression and communication patterns. Most buildings are not as intelligent as the machines they contain. A car-door tells me more about the state of the car and my own state than a front-door of the state of the apartment. Airplane and car-technology are becoming information paradises and architecture becomes a field of interface-technology. Architects, construction artists and theorists will discuss how much architecture and electronics really know about each other.
