HONORARY MENTION
... And by his Suggestion ...
Adrian Moore

Based on the first book of Milton's 'Paradise Lost''... And by his suggestion.. .'is a piece of programme music for tape depicting both a global view of' Paradise Lost' (the book) and in detail the first book which describes Satan's expulsion from heaven and his resulting fury. In addition, a global sense of loss is felt as one enters a landscape that is both chaotic and yet barren. Words and phrases were recorded both sung and spoken in the studio. They wen then transformed to give further potency to their meaning. Careful attention was paid to giving time for clearly recognizable phrases to be heard (and if possible the processes that made their fragmentation). In addition to vocal sources rich in pitch and rhythmic detail, drone-like sounds were created by means of feeding sounds back onto themselves. The work begins with a clap of thunder falling into a cavernous space in such a way as to give the sense of moving from this world into another.
