HONORARY MENTION
Racoon
Philippe Gassie, Bruno Simon
'Racoon' is the latest car to be presented by Renault at the Geneva Car Show. The promotion film about'Racoon' premiered at the Imagina '93 in Monaco, at a time when the car had not even been built. The film was shot at various locations in the South of France while the car was still on the drawing board and existed only as sketches, designs and as an untransportable wooden model. The fact that the virtual, three-dimensional 'Racoon' could appear in a 'real-live' film is possible because an outline model of the car already existed in a computer. The film could therefore show the car on the road with other cars and moving within its future, real environment. For this, Renault Design Industries had to devise their own video system, with the help of the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA). For the first time, a virtual object could be shown in the real world, as a perfectly formed synthetic picture without the aid of drawing animation or retouching.
