HONORARY MENTION
Mimetismo
Stéphane Roy
The acoustic and electronic components of 'Mimetismo' interrupt and mimic each other, sometimes fusing within a sonic material in constant development. The guitar abandons its traditional role of soloist, its timbre dissolves within the electronic material.
Homophony, homorhythmy and, above all, homomorphism amalgamate the sounds of the instrument and the tape. The habitual predominance of high pitches is replaced by variations of the mass, the intensity and the harmonic spectrum that render the instrumental play unusual and unforeseeable. Adequate amplification of the instrument allows for the exploration of a new 'guitaristic' articulation. I developed the original project of the piece with the intention to realize a mixed music composition with a purely electroacoustical language. The exploration of new articulation, of timbres and the strongly morphologic attitude are characteristic for my personal adaptation of the electroacoustical language to the instrument, are the results of experimental work with the guitarist. The piece - sponsored by the Canadian Arts Council-is a commission by the guitarist Arturo Parra. (Stéphane Roy)
