HONORARY MENTION
Mutation Raytraced on the Plane
William Latham
I describe my work as 'Computer Art' and not 'Computer Graphics' and I feel that it is important to make this distinction before I start describing my work. In general terms I view myself as an artist who is using the computer to make art by exploring evolutionary ideas.
The works I produce include animations, video installations, stereo viewers, Cibachrome and live installations where I evolve computer sculptures in the gallery combined with large scale video projection. All my work is concerned with concept of evolution and metamorphosis of form. The work stems from a belief that sculpture does not have to be physical but can be virtually 3D in computer space, secondly that sculpture should be continually in a fluid state of change, as shown in my animated films, where sculptures continuously metamorphose or breed. The artistic process is in two parts, firstly as 'creator', I create the rules of a virtual sculpture garden, creating light, rules of birth, artificial life rules and so on. The second phase is to be like a gardener and work within the sculpture garden constrained by the creation rules.(William Latham)
