L'Enfant de la Haute Mer
Laetitia Gabrielli, Pierre Marteel , Max Tourret

In an abandoned town by the sea, a little girl clings to her dreams.

In a village surrounded by the sea, a little girl lives dreaming from one day to the next. Suddenly, she thinks she has discovered something ...

This seven-minute short film was made as a graduation project at the Supinfocom (School for Infography and Multimedia in Valenciennes, France).
The scenario was inspired by the novel "L'Enfant de la Haute Mer" by Jules Supervielle. "We chose this story, because it conveys a dream-like mood and because there is something compelling about it - that is what we wanted to reproduce in pictures. We worked mostly with the lighting, with light and shadow."
The result of this rendering process merges 3D and 2D: all the textures attached to 3D objects are watercolored.
"We tried to achieve a 'warm' result and to avoid the coldness that is normally associated with computer graphics."
Every stage of the realization (scenario, storyboard, animation and sound) was executed by the group. We relied a lot on painting (Victor Hugo, Turner, Carpeaux) to come to an agreement about the atmosphere and style of the film.
"L'Enfant de la Haute Mer" has already traveled throughout Europe. It was shortlisted at the "Semaine de la critique" of the Cannes Festival and at the "Festival international du film d'animation d'Annecy" in the short film category and was awarded prizes at "Rencontres Européennes de la jeune création numérique" (Valenciennes) and the "Leaf Awards" of "Digital Media World" (GB) in the student film category.
