Often when visiting a web site, the user is disappointed upon finally viewing the contents of a page. When creating "Face to Face" I wanted to take advantage of what is unique and exciting about WWW browser software: the ability to create a visual end to the Internet.
My artwork originates in a digital form involving participants over the Internet and then evolves into a physical piece. Using a graphical browser offered me a medium with which to return the artworks to a digital format and also to give the participants a chance to view the pieces they helped create. As an introduction to this site I created a "gallery" for the visitor to become familiar with my work.
The section called "Character Sites" originated in a piece titled "Character Revelations" that investigated the role of the face in text-based communication on the Internet. In this piece, participants responded to morphed images of my face. They are asked to simply describe the person they are viewing. Each viewer will have the chance to contribute to a living piece and then return to view their contribution or comments about their own image. In the future, I would like to continue to create interactive works that would reside at this site.
