HONORARY MENTION
Forrest Gump (Visual Effects)
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), George Murphy

George Murphy (USA) brings to ILM a unique mix of photographic, artistic and electronic experience earned over many years as a successful working professional specializing in effects oriented imagery. Joined ILM in 1991. Feature films: "Forrest Gump", "Jurassic Park", "Death Becomes Her", "Hook". Collaborators: Ken Ralston (USA) and Stephen Rosenbaum (USA).

"Forrest Gump" is the tale of one decent and simple man's journey through the last thirty years of American history. He touches and changes the lives of many people. Industrial Light & Magic, along with Alien Hall of Special Effects Unlimited, was asked to create a wide variety of illusions, many achieving a new level of film realism. Using new computer graphics technology we were able to attain the subtle nuances necessary for the strong emotional content of the shots. The 120 visual effects shots used a full range of techniques: computer animation, roto mattes, matte paintings, computer graphics and digital composites (one optical composite for old time's sake), blue-screen photography, live-action motion control, and even a few elements shot on HI-8. All these techniques were creatively combined to let us see the world of Forrest Gump. It was my responsibility to design and execute all of the effects shots and deliver them on time and within budget. I was involved at the earliest stages of pre-production, again throughout principal photography in South Carolina, Georgia, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles; and finally I guided all the work through the post-production phase at Industrial Light & Magic.
