HONORARY MENTION
Suite blance pour les temps nouveaux
Patrick Ascione

Patrick Ascione (F), born in 1953, has directed the CAP (Centre d'Art Acousmatique et de Polyphonie Spatiale) in Vierzon since 1991. Cofounder of the ABSO movement (Mouvement pour le développement de l'art acousmatique) in 1991. Work for the Groupe Expérimental de Bourges; working visits to GMEA, GES, GRM, GMVL, IRCAM, CIRM. Several commissioned works for the GRM.

"Suite blanche pour les temps nouveaux" ("White Suite for the New Age") is an acousmatic suite for the new, still white age of the coming millenium, a symphony of hope for this new era, for this as yet unwritten page which is opening itself up to us. A sonorous polychromy of dazzling white in the form of a hymn captured on a tape... The theme that is treated in this work is consciously lyrical. It celebrates the imminency of the year 2000. It was an opportunity for me to realize a work that should address as broad an audience as possible, without loosing myself, however, in cheap references and musical banalities, and particularly without betraying the spirit behind these forms of expression. This inevitably entails a shift in the margins of current electro-acoustical music and an attempt to broaden the possibilities for the way in which it is perceived. It seems to me that it is difficult in any new art form to define the scope of thinking and acting within which further development is possible, without ending up outside that scope or in a different or previously existing area... At the same time, however, this attempt at definitions makes it possible to further develop and refine the discipline in question.
