HONORARY MENTION
Onimusha 3
Mikitaka Kurasawa, Takashi Yamazaki

Onimusha 3, developed by CAPCOM, is a sword action game for SONY Playstation 2. The game was put on the market in February 2004 in Japan, April in the United States, July in Europe. In the third of the Onimusha series, the actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, who is well known in East Asia, plays the part of the main character Samanosuke Akechi, and Jean Reno plays the other main character Jacques Blanc.

This entry is the opening cinematic for Onimusha 3. This is a mixture of a Japanese Ninja and Samurai sword-fighting and an acrobatic Kungfu action movie.

The time is 16th century Japan, in the age of civil wars. The wicked demon king Nobunaga is about to conquer the country.

A man with armor powered by demons, Samanosuke, sneaks into the wicked demon’s camp and tries to prevent the attack. Along the way he has many demons to defeat before the final fight with his old enemy, Gargant.

Mikitaka Kurasawa (ROBOT Communications), who produced the cinematics for the first two titles of Onimusha, also produced this cinematic. Takashi Yamazaki (Shirogumi Inc.), who directed, scripted and supervised the VFX for the live-action films Juvenile and Returner, directed and realized the photorealistic images. The Marshall arts action in this cinematic was reproduced completely by motion capture and CG animation, which was directed by Donnie Yen (Blade 2, Hero), an action star who works in Hong Kong and Hollywood. For the background plates of indoor scenes, we captured one sixth scaled miniature sets with motion control cameras. For the outdoor scenes, we shot ground textures flying over and climbing Mt. Fuji. The plug-in renderer of 3ds max, V-Ray, and HDRI lighting made this original photo-realistic image possible.
