Kythera-Family.net
The Greek island of Kythera has a Diaspora community 40 times greater than the population of the island itself. Its children are spread out all over the world, the majority of them having settled in Australia, northern Europe and the USA. The goal of the website is to provide a state-of-the-art community platform to which all members can directly contribute their collections of Kytherian history, be it photographs, stories, recipes, family trees, maps or one of over 30 other categories.
The site has reached thousands of members of the world-wide Kytherian community, with more than 1100 entries uploaded in less than 10 months from all corners of the earth. The site also provides current information about the island—from a rare snow storm to pictures of the carnival parade—accessible to those of Kytherian heritage who cannot be on the island as often as they might like to.
The population of Kythera has declined from 14,000 in 1900 to 2,500 in 2004. The bulk of the remaining islanders are over 70 years of age, and so the decline will continue. By providing historical, sociological and current affairs information to the Diaspora community, the interest in the island can be enhanced, especially among younger members of the Kytherian community who can research their heritage through the powerful medium of the Internet.
The site is free to all users and has already brought hundreds of members of the community together, with relatives separated by distance and time finding each other for the first time. Most of the work for the site has been done on a voluntary basis, which, given the technical complexity and user-specific design of Kythera-Family.net makes it unusual.
