Multimedia Graphische Wien

25 pupils from the School of Graphics in Vienna created 3D animated sequences of a wide range of chairs as a semester project.

First we carefully chose some exquisite pieces from the history of chair design. We then processed, modelled, textured and combined them into one animation. We also subjected some of our own designs to the same process.

The furniture created in this fashion became the stars of our animation: objects construct themselves and then, through modification and the addition of other chair parts, transform into new objects. In this way viewers are playfully taken through the history of chair design.

After visiting an exhibition at the Hofmobiliendepot, a furniture warehouse in Vienna, we began modelling chairs in a 3D programme. Unique about this project was the interplay of so many different features and chair designers. The greatest challenge in animating the furniture, was to bring everything together aesthetically. Through compaction, duplication, dissolution and rhythmic movements, a diversity and unity have been engendered that live from the creative powers of the designers. Aside from the reduced graphics of the animations, the outstanding feature of the project is its successful development via a production pipeline.
