DISTINCTION
The Incredibles
Brad Bird, PIXAR

From the Academy Award-winning creators of Toy Story, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo comes this hilarious action-packed computeranimated adventure about superheroes. Bob Paar used to be one of the world’s greatest superheroes (known to all as “Mr. Incredible”), saving lives and fighting evil on a daily basis, but now he’s a clock-punching insurance claims adjuster fighting boredom and a bulging waistline.

The most complex computer-animated entertainment yet created, The Incredibles nevertheless relies on the same traditional elements as all compelling motion picture stories—character development, production design, cinematography, costumes, effects, music and overall vision—pushing each of these to new levels within the genre to create a film unlike any other.

Although computer animation has progressed by leaps and bounds over the last decade, it had still lagged behind in achieving many key human characteristics until The Incredibles. It was previously considered impossible to ask an animator to create muscles that would flex and ripple like true muscles, hair that could flip and bounce like authentic hair, skin that might pucker and stretch like actual skin and clothing that could move independently of a body just like the real thing. With The Incredibles, the Pixar team was asked to innovate, expand upon and find new ways to push this process to its farthest creative extremes.
