HONORARY MENTION
TV-IV
Scott Arford

TV-IV is a live performance for two video monitors. The monitors are modulated by the sound of their own picture tubes. A microphone is attached to each of the tubes, and this sound is processed through Max/MSP. This (audio) signal is sent to the PA as well as to the video inputs of the monitors.

It’s a deliberately crude translation of sound to video and video to sound. A reluctant audio-video feedback loop achieved through a fluke of semicompatible technologies (audio as abstracted image, image-light as audio). The resulting sounds and images are both haunting and beautiful. The interaction between the sound-light forms is sometimes humorous and sometimes powerful, as the buzzing, flickering dialogue between the two monitors progresses from a mantra-like drone to highly animated rhythmic pulses.
