Mindplotter is one of six trailers that we made for the 14th International Festival of Animated Film in Stuttgart in 2007. When we first began developing it, our idea—since it was to be a trailer for this kind of festival—was to create a visualization of the actual process of making the film. Though it wasn’t long until we realized we’d like to do this in an emotional and rather abstract way. To begin with we defined two basic states that are integral to our work. The one is the inspirational phase in which we let our minds drift, filter and digest things from a torrent of information; the other is the work phase, in which everything we have absorbed is reproduced after being combined, altered and developed. Smooth transitions between the two states are possible and necessary, as they allow the contrast arising between the more organic process of envisioning things and the rather mechanical one of producing them to blur a bit.
