Machine Matrix is a hybrid sound installation and musical performance environment. A collection of electronic surplus, trash materials, and modified percussion instruments are retrofitted with electro magnetic actuators so that they are electro-mechan-ically played as musical-machine-instruments.The collective ensemble of instruments is installed in a given performance/exhibition space so that it forms a room environment of sound sculptures. Midi signals, which normally provide control of an elec tronic music studio, control the movement and kinetic activation of these mechanical/robotic devices.The installation as a whole constitutes a programmable machine orchestra, for which musi cal compositions are written in midi sequencing software.
