VOX-5
Trevor Wishart
In "VOX-5" by Trevor Wishart, a recognisable voice is transformed into another voice with the help of computer technology.
Some of Trevor Wishart's most recent works employ computer technology, for example, to enable the exploration of new rhythmic procedures (VOX 3), and for the transformation of one recognisable sound source into another (VOX-5, commissioned by IRCAM in 1986). The programs he developed to produce the latter piece are still available on the system at IRCAM.
Trevor Wishart's most well-known works include "RED BIRD ... a political prisoner's dream" (Prizewinner at Bourges International Electro-Acoustic Music Festival 1978, "TUBA MIRUM" (1979, music-theatre for prepared Tuba, electrically operated audiovisual mutes, tape and actors, Gaudeamus prizewinner, 1979) and "ANTICREDOS" (1980, for 6 amplified vocalists using extended vocal techniques). In 1985 he published the book "On Sonic Art" exploring the new world of aesthetic possibilities opened up by computer technology and he is currently involved in the "Composer's Desktop Project" making powerful music computing tools available to composers using affordable domestic technology.
"VOX-5" was realized on a VAX (ARRAY Porcessor).
Software: Phase Vocoder (Mark Dolson); Data Transformation Programme (Trevor Wishart).
