The Prix Ars Electronica prize competition was launched in 1987. Its mission was to show that the computer had become one of the most important resources at the disposal of creative artists and that computer art was to be understood within the overall context of computer culture. Artists from all over the world could submit works in the Computer Animation, Computer Music and Computer Graphics categories. In Computer Animation, 116 works were entered by 88 artists and scientists, 160 works were received in Computer Music, and 183 artists submitted 432 works in the Computer Graphics category.
