In order to take developments in the Internet into account, the World Wide Web category was renamed .net, emblematic of its emphasis on network art. It focused on what it meant to be part of a network, and the implications of utilizing this particular technology as an artistic medium. Competition was also held in the Computer Animation, Interactive Art and Computer Music categories at the 1997 Prix Ars Electronica.
