This year, the competition’s oldest category, Computer Animation, was converted into a double category entitled Computer Animation / Visual Effects. For the first time in its history, the Prix Ars Electronica awarded two Golden Nicas, four Awards of Distinction and a total of 24 Honorary Mentions in a single category in order to be able to single out for recognition works from well-funded and well-staffed professional studios as well as projects by independent animators, filmmakers and researchers.
1998 was also the inaugural year of the “cybergeneration – u19 freestyle computing” category for young people under age 19 in Austria. Attracting over 540 works of astoundingly high quality, this was a big hit right from the start.
The other 1998 Prix Ars Electronica categories were Computer Music, Interactive Art and .net.
