The transformation of the Computer Music category—a part of the competition since its inception—into Digital Musics was designed to signal the Prix Ars Electronica’s receptivity to all types of music made possible by the computer and to accord recognition to digital innovation. A total of 720 entries were submitted to Digital Musics. The other 1999 Prix Ars Electronica categories were Computer Animation / Visual Effects (with two Golden Nicas), Interactive Art, .net and the cybergeneration – u19 freestyle computing category for young people.
